AF-Colenco's department "Groundwater Protection and Waste Disposal" recently contributed a total of 8 presentations and posters at one of the largest conferences world-wide on the topic "Clays in Natural & Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement" (see www.nantes2010.com for details).

We presented results of recent studies related to:

  • the safety assessment for a deep geological repository in clay - Poster 1, Poster 2
  • the characterisation of the hydraulic conductivity of a clay formation in an underground rock laboratory - Poster 3, Poster 4
  • the analysis of heat and gas dissipation in a planned deep geological repository in clay by means of numerical simulations - Poster 5, Poster 6
  • the temperature and relative humidity conditions in drifts and shafts of a deep geological repository in clay (oral presentation), and

Avce Pumped Storage Plant, Slovenia
(April 2010)

UW Zillis

On March 30, 2010, the 180 MW Avce PSP was put into operation at an opening ceremony by the Slovenian Prime Minister. The project is located on the Soca River close to the Italian border. The plant construction started in 2005 following the Licensing Project in 2004. The Avce project is the first pump storage plant in Slovenia and, with 180 MW, the biggest hydropower plant in the country. The plant was designed by AF-Colenco in consortium with Korona Ltd from Ljubljana. AF-Colenco has been involved in the design and implementation of this plant since 2003 until present.

Overhaul UW Zillis (KHR)
(March 2010)

UW Zillis

As already realized in the 60/16kV substation Rüti, the substation Zillis of KHR (Kraftwerke Hinterrhein AG) will undergo a complete refurbishment. This is the last of a string of substations which were refurbished by KHR. AF-Colenco could secure the Contract. Our services include feasibility study, planning and engineering as well as site supervision and commissioning.
The substation consists of 3x 60kV outdoor bays as well as 5x 16kV metalclad feeders. The 10 MVA power transformer vintage 1984, will remain, but undergo a thorough inspection. The substation will be shutdown completely for the refurbishment. A mobile substation will feed the area during the works. The site will start begin of April 2010 and the re-energizing is scheduled for the 9. September 2010.
