Pakistan – Two Hydropower Projects Open Up a New Key Market for Colenco (September 2006)

Colenco has won two important contracts in the hydropower sector in Pakistan heralding their entry into this important and rapidly developing market.

Feasibility Study of Dasu Hydropower Project

Colenco is a key member of a consortium which has started a 30 month study of the 3500 MW Dasu Hydropower Project on the Indus River in northern Pakistan for the Client WAPDA. The engagement requires detailed investigations and engineering studies of the site located on the Karakoram Highway.

Feasibility Study of a 140 MW Private Hydropower Project

Colenco have been engaged as Owner's Engineer by the private developers of a 140 MW scheme North West Frontier Province. The bankable feasibility study of this project will commence in the summer of 2006. The main component of the project is a 13 km headrace tunnel.

Software Development for the Visualisation of Quarry Planning
(August 2006)

The manufacturing of cement starts with the quarrying of limestone and shale. Holcim uses a Quarry Scheduling Optimization software (QSO Expert) to plan its quarrying activities including materials blending and production scheduling.

Today’s QSO Expert is an interactive, graphic-oriented program which relies on a 3D block model of the limestone and shale deposit. The model consists of many small blocks to which data, such as grades and other material properties, from site investigations are assigned by interpolation. The 3D model therefore provides an inventory of the deposit with a geometric distribution of the materials.

Colenco was asked by Holcim Group Support to expand the original 2D QSO Expert software. The main objectives were to improve the data exchange with other software and to enhance the interactivity of QSO Expert. The new import/export functionalities support a wide selection of data formats and allow, for example, the integration of digital terrain models and aerial photographs.

The main upgrade was introduced with the fully interactive 3D viewing tool. It enables the user to shift view angles of the 3D block model, zoom in and out, cut plane views, scroll through block layers, extract blocks, display and assign block properties etc. – and do it all by clicking into the model. An added bonus was the implementation of an object manager, a tool used to handle objects like drill holes, trees, buildings etc.

The final product is a more powerful and user-friendly QSO Expert. Our services to Holcim Group Support continue with the maintenance of the software.

Animation of the construction progress and activities
at the Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory
(August 2006)

Andra, the French radioactive waste management agency has relied on our services at the Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory in France since 2004. One of the facility's purposes is the determination of formation properties in view of a feasibility assessment for a deep geological repository. Colenco has provided comprehensive support in the hydrogeological investigations since the beginning.

Early in 2006, we were commissioned for a series of video sequences to give an overall view of the laboratory layout from all angles and provide technical information about the excavation and experiments carried out. Our task began with the construction of the 3D virtual model of the research laboratory in order to animate it efficiently. The information story line was assembled in close cooperation with the client.

The finished video sequences show the progression of the shaft and drift excavation as well as the chronology of the various drift experiments with installations being made and boreholes being drilled. More detailed sequences in the series list the types and purposes of testing in specific areas of the laboratory. The videos were created in several formats to allow presentation with different media supports incl. television.

The 4 dimensional animation clips make the complex structure and the course of events easier to understand and thus, are a valuable communication tool for ANDRA in providing information to the general public, the authorities and to their own project teams.
