Flood Protection and Renaturation of the Suhre River (Muhen North), Switzerland (August 2004)

In the Canton Argovia, the Suhre River runs from the village Sursee into Lake Sempach and then flows through the valley, bearing the same name, down to the River Aare. The municipality of Muhen had been experiencing recurring flooding due to unexpected overloading of the river. Colenco was commissioned by the Public Works Department of the Canton Argovia, to prepare a flood protection study for the affected area which would meet the requirements concerning ecology and natural environment protection. The project was divided into a northern and a southern section.

The northern section project (Muhen North) is estimated at 4.22 million SFr. The discharge capacity on an 1100 m stretch of the River Suhre will be increased from the current 30 m3/s to approximately 68 m3/s. The most important construction measures are:

  • lowering the riverbed by 1 to 1.5 m with a one-sided expansion of the channel
  • river engineering protection and renaturation
  • demolition and reconstruction of two bridges
  • replacement of existing vertical weirs with fish-friendly block ramps
  • diversion of of the Suhre into a new riverbed in the northern area
  • removal of residual waste
  • greening the riverbanks with native flora
Finished renaturalized section of the River Suhre

Work on the northern section began at the end of 2002 and was completed in the spring of 2004. Work is currently in progress on the southern section of the project (Muhen South).
